Although I recommend these three sites, the main site I use is Travelocity because it tends to have the flights on the date and destination I am looking for.  With Travelocity, after entering the cities you are leaving from and going to, you will see the nearby airports tab next to the your search tab.  If you click on the nearby airports tab, you would be able to find even cheaper deals on your airplane ticket by leaving from a nearby airport. 

Another tip to get the best deal for your flight is by booking ahead of time.  Especially when you are trying to book a flight during the holidays, you should book well in advance. 

If you can not find what you are looking for in these three websites, you could also try www.bing.com.  This website can be used to get a list of price comparisions for a variety of things, not just airline tickets. 

Airline reward points is another way you can fly for cheap or free.  A lot of credit card companies offers travel points for making purchases using their credit card.  Some credit cards that offers airline rewards points are capital one, american express, discover, starwood preferred guest, citi and chase. However, of these cards, I have the best experience with discover.  Their interest does not sky rocket from a late payment, so it is a fairly safe credit card to have.
